Wall Paneling & Wainscoting

Wall paneling transforms a flat wall into architectural detail. Grand Trim installs board and batten, shaker panels, raised panels, and wainscoting with clean lines and precise layout throughout.

DETAILS

Wall paneling is one of the most effective ways to change how a room feels without changing its structure. A flat painted wall becomes a surface with depth, texture, and character. Done well, paneling reads as part of the home's original architecture. Done carelessly, the layout looks off, the lines aren't consistent, and the joints pull your attention in the wrong direction.

Grand Trim installs wall paneling and wainscoting for homeowners across New Jersey, working in a range of styles to match both traditional and contemporary homes. Board and batten uses vertical boards with flat battens applied over the seams to create a clean, graphic pattern that works particularly well in farmhouse, craftsman, and transitional interiors. Shaker-style paneling uses recessed frames built on a grid to create a classic look that suits formal rooms, dining rooms, and primary bedrooms. Raised panel wainscoting, with its dimensional profile and traditional shadow lines, is well suited to more formal architectural styles.

Full-Height vs. Wainscoting

Full-height paneling carries the treatment from floor to ceiling for a more immersive effect, while standard wainscoting stops at chair rail height and is typically paired with a different wall treatment above.

The Installation Process

The installation process begins with layout — establishing consistent spacing, setting the horizontal and vertical lines that the entire pattern depends on, and confirming how the pattern terminates at corners, doorways, and windows. Material choices include paint-grade MDF, which provides a smooth, consistent surface for painted applications, and solid wood options for spaces where a stained or natural finish is preferred. Crown molding, chair rail, and baseboard are typically incorporated into wainscoting installations to complete the look.

A review we received from a homeowner in Central New Jersey described the wainscoting work as flawless — looking like it had always been part of the house. That's the standard we hold every installation to. Grand Trim is fully licensed and insured in New Jersey (NJ HIC License #13VH13073500), and most wall paneling projects are completed in one to three days.

Here's what's included when you go with Grand Trim:
  • Initial layout planning — establishing consistent spacing, horizontal datums, and vertical center lines
  • Confirming panel terminations at corners, doorways, and windows before any cuts are made
  • Material cutting and fitting of all panel components
  • Panel installation — boards, battens, frames, or raised panels depending on style
  • Chair rail or cap rail installation at top of wainscoting
  • Baseboard installation or integration with existing baseboard
  • Inside and outside corner treatments
  • Doorway and window casing integration
  • Nail hole filling and caulking at all seams and transitions
  • Final inspection for consistent spacing, plumb lines, and surface readiness for paint or finish

Luis and team did a great job end to end on designing and building my master closet. It was a seamless process to work with Luis on the design and he was very flexible to some specific design needs I had. Would definitely recommend Grand Trim if you are considering a closet refresh.

I was looking for someone to build custom closets for a long time but hesitant to go with unknown contractors. Saw Grand Trim’s work at one of my friend’s house and liked it. They are very professional and hard working people. They can customize as per your needs as well as provide their own recommendations on what will look better. They work very fast and get things done quickly and more importantly with awesome quality. I literally had my whole house closet makeover done thanks to them. They also did a nice moulding work on my walls giving my house a completely new look. Fair in pricing too; they are not after looting people on the name of customization, bunch of guys out there to work hard and make a living. Their work speaks for itself. One more thing, you can’t find better people to work with. Very nice and humble. Definitely going to recommend them to many of my friends. See pictures, the closets done are looking great.

Our Working Process

#01

Layout Planning & Line Setting

The wall is measured, the pattern spacing is calculated, and all horizontal and vertical reference lines are established before any material is touched. This is where consistency across the entire installation is determined.

#02

Material Cutting & Prep

All panel components are cut to length and dry-fit against the layout lines. Pieces are checked for fit at corners, transitions, and doorways before fastening begins.

#03

Panel Installation

Boards, battens, frames, or raised panels are installed to the wall following the established layout. Each piece is fastened, checked for plumb and level, and confirmed against the spacing plan before moving to the next.

#04

Cap Rail, Chair Rail & Baseboard Integration

The top termination of the wainscoting — whether a chair rail or flat cap rail — is installed level across the wall. Baseboard is installed or integrated with existing trim to close the bottom of the panel field.

#05

Caulk, Fill & Final Inspection

All nail holes are filled, seams and transitions are caulked, and the full installation is reviewed for consistent spacing, clean lines, and surface readiness before the job is signed off.

Layout Planned Before Any Cuts

Spacing is calculated and reference lines are set before material is touched. Consistent spacing across the entire wall — including balanced panels at corners — is determined at the planning stage, not adjusted after the fact.

Clean Terminations at Every Edge

Corners, doorways, and windows are treated as intentional termination details. Returns, miters, and built-up profiles are used wherever needed so the pattern closes cleanly at every edge.

MDF for Painted Finishes — No Grain Telegraphing

Paint-grade MDF is used for all painted panel applications. It holds crisp edges, machines cleanly, and eliminates the grain movement that shows through paint on solid wood over time.
